Mattress Buying Guide

It is no secret that searching for a new mattress can be daunting. It not a decision that has to be made regularly but it is incredibly important to find the best mattress for you. It really is the key to a good night’s sleep and when you get it right, a mattress should last you years. If you, like many others, are struggling to know where to start, we are here to help!

What Size?

Mattresses come in all shapes and sizes. If you have an existing bed frame/base that does not need replacing, make sure you know what size it is to ensure you are looking for the correct mattress. Some pointers to bear in mind when shopping for your new mattress.

  • A mattress should be at least 10cm longer than the tallest person using it.
  • The width of the mattress should allow you to put your hands under your head without your elbows touching the edge of the sleep surface or the person sleeping next to you.

What Type?

Miracoil/Open Coil Mattresses - Open coil mattresses provide excellent value for money and are available in all sizes and support preferences. Support comes from metal springs that have been evenly distributed throughout the mattress and are typically topped with layers of fabric and foam.

Pocket Spring Mattresses - Pocket sprung mattresses are made up of individual springs that are cushioned within individual pockets of material, surrounded by a generous filling, most commonly wool, for maximum comfort. Pocket springs respond independently to the contours of your body for enhanced support.

Combination Mattresses - These mattresses generally feature the base of an open coil or pocket spring mattress but with the added luxury of a memory foam, latex or geltex layer for a unique comfort experience. They provide the best of both worlds if you cannot decide between an Advanced or Traditional Spring mattress.

Advanced Mattresses - Advanced mattresses use innovative, ‘advanced’, technologies such as Latex, Geltex or Memory Foam to form their support structure. These specialised materials have been developed by experts to mould around your body’s natural contours for beneficial support and enticing comfort.

What Tension?

Everyone has their own preference when it comes to mattress tension. All our mattresses have been colour coded to help you differentiate your preferred tension when shopping in store and online. Some mattresses are available in a choice of tensions.

What are the best mattresses for bad backs?

Ever heard of the theory that if you struggle with bad aches and pains you must have a firm mattress? This isn't always the case! It is all down to the quality of support that the mattress provides and this can vary from person to person. The perfect mattress will allow the spine to align in a neutral position whilst contouring the shape of your body.

So, which mattress is best for you?

The one and only golden rule when it comes to choosing your mattress is to ensure the support is perfect for you. This may be on a soft, medium, or firm mattress.  If you are still unsure what mattress is right for you, we would recommend popping into either our Lake Superstore or Riverway Sleep Centre, where our experts will be happy to help you find your perfect match!
